There is so much to love about this game: the story is engaging the banter between the characters is hilarious the combat feels tight in the right ways, and messy in the right ways you'd expect big firefights between multiple characters would feel and the game has such a fantastic art direction. I am sincerely hoping that my feelings about Guardians do not change, because as of the time I'm writing this list, I feel like this is an achievement in the superhero action space.

Guardians of the Galaxy - I have this particular curse with GOTY lists in that there's always one game that I haven't finished that I feel really belongs on the list, but often times I look back on and think 'yeah maybe that one wasn't the right one for the list'.

The game's writing is superb and the platforming is brilliant, throwing a slew of visually and mechanically unique locales for the player to traverse.

Psychonauts 2 - Psychonauts 2 quickly picks up with this hilarious and zany tale about secret agents entering people's minds.

While I am not as active as I was when the game first launched, that amount of time was some of the best time I spent with a game this year. The game feels so good and every win I made online felt satisfying and well-earned. However, with STRIVE's online features and rollback netcode, I was absolutely hooked into trying to become the best combatant I could be.

Guilty Gear -STRIVE- I'm no stranger to fighting games, but after a certain point, I have a hard time getting into them.

Horizon 5 is just a very comfortable game to slip into and lose yourself with. Mexico is such a beautiful and varied map.

The core driving is so satisfying and having different conditions impact your ability to drive keeps things from getting too predictable. There is so much to do, and all of it feels fresh and provides some new challenge to overcome. The amount of variety in this game is astonishing. Forza Horizon 5 - After trying Horizon 3 and 4 but totally bouncing off of them, I came into Horizon 5 once again with an open mind - and this time, it absolutely stuck.The core is the same, but having a wider breadth of monster types and new ways to engage these monsters makes this a marked improvement over World. What I think is most important about Rise and makes it a triumph is how it reintroduces stranger and more elaborate gameplay scenarios from its predecessor. Monster Hunter Rise - A worthy follow up to World, Rise introduces several new QOL improvements that go a long way.Few gaming experiences have made me laugh as hard as I have playing Superstars with friends. Mario Party Superstars - While at its core a remixing of Mario Party's greatest hits, I cannot oversell how important it is to have a fully functioning online Mario Party.There are some absolutely mind-blowing events in the DLC that make it a worthy follow-up. Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye - While overall a less impactful experience than the base game, Echoes of the Eye offers a new and terrifying location for players that leverages the same brilliant environmental puzzle solving that made the original so memorable.

The narrative is very mixed tonally, and I would describe it as more absurd than touching, but overall the game is an achievement in game design. There are so many clever implementations of small ideas that turn into whole levels and despite having so many different gameplay approaches, the game plays absolutely flawlessly.

It Takes Two - I had a blast playing It Takes Two with a good friend of mine and maybe it wouldn't be so high on my list if it were not for that specific experience, but the game itself is masterfully designed.

Also a big fan of how the narrative is relayed to the player through environmental storytelling and incidental notes scattered throughout the levels. It gives players the same amount of freedom as their previous games, while locking them into their decisions.

Deathloop - While the narrative of Deathloop ended on a somewhat unsatisfying note, from a gameplay standpoint, it's a perfect encapsulation of Arkane's immersive sim formula.

The game blends the player's experience with the timeloop gameplay in such a perfect resonance, that I felt I was leveraging my knowledge more often than any skill the game had provided me to advance.

Gnosia - A touching and twisty visual novel wrapped in a Mafia/Werewolf gameplay structure, Gnosia impressed me with its creative gameplay and storytelling.
